Andy Paltos, C0-Founder and Designer, Rolla’s Jeans @andy_paltos // www.rollas.com.au
What was the situation in which this photo was taken?
I was in Los Angeles for work showing the new Rolla’s line. It was winter over there at the time and it was 30 degrees and sunny! It is a rare day that the sun does not come out in L.A.
Could you tell us something about what you do?
I’m primarily denim designer. I design 8 collections a year which consist of both denim and apparel.
How did you first become interested in it?
Denim and cars have played a huge part in my life. Growing up it was all about wheels. Skateboards, bikes, old cars, loved them all. In my late teens 1960’s classic car’s became some what of an obsession for me which led to vintage clothing and denim. 60’s cars and jeans seemed to go hand in hand. I started collecting tons of old jeans and jackets. I loved the look of all the vintage denim but I found the fit was never quite right which got me started on customisation. The more I got into it the more I fell in love with it. I started adding darts, patching, running the legs in, bleaching, painting them with house paint etc. I experimented constantly which eventually led me to spending the last 13 years or so designing for global denim brands.
What do you enjoy most about what you do?
Travel. I get to see the world. With my line of work I have to travel to the U.S and Europe quite a bit for various trade fairs and vintage flea markets to source new denim wash templates for our laundries. I am never gone for too long which is good because although I love to travel I also love coming home to Australia and hanging with my family.
What are you working on at the moment?
I am currently working on 4 ranges: International Summer 16 / High Winter Aust 16 / International Winter 17 / Aust Summer 17
What are the challenges in what you do, and how do you overcome them?
Staying fresh and relevant in the market place is always a challenge in denim. Travel helps with this as I get to see what is happening on the streets in different parts of the world which inspires me to do and try new things.
Could you describe your personal style?
Classic and simple. Jeans and a T-shirt.
What is your present state of mind?
Busy. I feel like It is a real juggling act these days between work, relationships, family and friends… And social media! Ha
What music are you listening to at the moment?
My taste in music is pretty varied. I grew up listening to a lot of Black Sabbath, AC/DC and Kiss with my brothers. Then I went through a real New Order and Joy Division stage in my 20’s…these days it is a mix of everything.
Which artists or designers inspire you?
I love Australian artists Ken Done , Sidney Nolan and my Uncle John Anderson’s work.
What is the purpose of art, in your view?
To express yourself in a visual way to others.
How do you spend your free time?
Relaxing with my kids and partner Sarah and working on my old car.
