A Creative lecturer, Illustrator & gamer from Pretoria, South Africa @savagejay87
What was the situation in which this photo was taken?
I was working on an illustration, and just thought I’d take a selfie…was quite late at night.
Could you tell us something about what you do?
I am a creative lecturer at Vega Brand school in Pretoria, South Africa. I train students how to operate Adobe software such as Illustrator and Photoshop to name a few. I also lecture into a few branding subjects. I am also a freelance illustration artist in my spare time.
How did you first become interested in creativity and teaching?
I have always been passionate about art and education. I studied at CFAD (Centre for Fine art, Animation & Design) in Durban, KwaZulu Natal. My entire life I have strived to educate people in any artform and also my passion for the youth. My first experience I had with what I do was when I interned under an Egyption animator whilst assisting at my origin college, CFAD, and since then I have grown in my art of lecturing.
What do you enjoy most about what you do?
Teaching with passion and seeing my students grow into the leaders of the industry.
What are you working on at the moment?
12 Illustration drawings for a corporate firm.
What are the challenges in what you do, and how do you overcome them?
Lack of interest and demotivation from my students. How I overcome this – I meet them half way. I am loud and relevant, I motivate and inspire, even to the point where I am so tired that I cant even keep my eyes open. Your work should not be just work, it should be a life long passion.
Could you describe your personal style?
Youthful and abstract. I say what I want when I want. I care beyond measure and love true. I am not a cool kid but will make you part of my crew anyday.
What is your present state of mind?
Peaceful yet in the eye of the storm.
What music are you listening to at the moment?
Future house.
Which artists or designers inspire you?
Banksy.
What is the purpose of art, in your view?
To create a perspective and then let you as the viewer interpret the outcome, good or bad, somber or mind-blowing. The journey of art should reflect more than one story.
How do you spend your free time?
Playing Playstation. I am an avid gamer and it is my favourite hobby.
